Favorite Food Mags

There are very few magazines that I find worth the coin I have to dole out, though I do find a few which are worth a subscription. Some are strictly food mags and others are publications that often times have better recipes than those devoted to the culinary arts. Below are this author's top picks, based upon the following criteria:
  • Recipes that actually work
  • Advertisement to article ratio
  • Photography (yes, it counts)
  • Article subjects

Victoria
Odd that the top pick would not be a food publication, but the recipes which can be found in the pages of this beautiful and glossy mag are fantastic and every one I've tried works! These issues have been saved and stored for years and after looking through a  Nov 2000 issue, my mother discovered a to-die-for recipe for a Turkey Pot Pie with a Maple Leaf-Shaped Cream-Cheese Crust which was just waiting to be discovered.

Saveur
A popular and obvious publication which also boasts an excellent website (http://www.saveur.com/), which is free to view so if you can't get the mag, then check out the website. The recipe selections are eclectic and for the most part, the recipes are written for even the novice cook.

 Country Living-British Edition
Not only is this a fun magazine filled with many non-food delights, but like Victoria, one can often find great recipes that work. Recently they've added Lamb Burgers with Herbed Yoghurt to their pages - delish! Note: this one is a bit pricey, but worth it.

Cooking Light
I was skeptical when I picked up my first issue and must admit I don't buy each one, but it is an excellent choice for those looking to lean up without sacrificing home cooked meals. Kamut Spirals with Chicken-Artichoke Wine Sauce - doesn't sound healthy, right? Well, it is and it looks amazing. Check out the recipe on their website.

You'll notice I have no chocolate specific magazines listed. Well, much to my dismay, the magazines I used to enjoy on this luscious ingredient have ceased and now I frantically search for new sources. A few worth checking out, though I no longer see these for sale (current issues) are Cocoaroma and Chocolatier (now Dessert Professional).
